UALR’s top finance students will learn alongside investment professionals from around the world at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting May 3. Financial luminaries Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger will discuss the performance of their company’s many holdings and offer seasoned advice on the current investment environment.
For the second year, Delta Trust and Bank is sponsoring the unique opportunity for three UALR College of Business students to engage in a challenging independent study that culminates with a trip to the annual meeting in Omaha, Neb. Students who have completed the Investment Analysis class apply and interview to participate in the intense study, which includes extensive reading such as text by Buffett’s mentor, Benjamin Graham, and videos on investment strategies of Berkshire Hathaway’s largest shareholder and CEO who is currently the wealthiest person in the U.S.
Additionally, Delta Trust executives give the students an overview of a comprehensive financial services firm, including trust management, estate planning, portfolio management, insurance, trading, and investment advice.
“With the combination of the academic study materials and interaction with professionals in the field, UALR students gain a perspective that would not be possible strictly in the classroom,” said Larry Holland, UALR professor of finance. “They are also better prepared to absorb the experience of attending the Berkshire Hathaway meeting.”
Finance majors selected for this year’s independent study are seniors Vladimir Findra from the Slovak Republic; Moustapha Abdul from Cameroon, Africa; and Sloan Scroggin of Little Rock.
“The internship training at Delta Trust provides the three students with extensive knowledge about investments, trust, and insurance with experts in each respective field,” said French Hill, chief executive officer of Delta Trust. “It is a privilege for Delta Trust to offer these students the opportunity to hear Warren Buffett and experience the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting. I believe it is an experience from which they will benefit from for many years.”
Findra, who came to UALR for its cross country and track and field teams, said, “It's unbelievable how complex the entire process is, and I have learned that you have to watch out for a wide range of factors other than pure financial ratios of the companies. I will be able to see at least a little part of the gigantic machinery of Berkshire Hathaway with my own eyes and see how it treats its shareholders.” He plans to pursue an MBA upon graduation this spring.
“It is a lifetime opportunity to come from so far and to be a part of a meeting with the most successful investor ever,” said Abdul, who is studying the financial planning track and is a financial analyst intern with Corporate Financial Outsourcing LLC. “I have been able to learn and appreciate Warren Buffett’s investment strategies, and I intend to use his wisdom not only for investment purposes but also as a way of living.”
