Berkshire Hathaway 2012 Trip

On Friday, May 4, 2012, Jess Blackwell, Larissa Cantarella, and Kyle Steed, this year’s three Berkshire Hathaway Independent Study participants, headed to Nebraska to hear none other than the world’s most famous investor, The Oracle of Omaha, Mr. Warren Buffett! After a morning appearance on Today’s THV that can be viewed here, the students were off to the airport!

Delta Trust & Bank gave each student and guest a Berkshire Hathaway/Delta Trust tote for the trip. They were a huge hit!

Before departure, we spent time with former U.S. Senator and the 39th Governor of Arkansas David Pryor while waiting at the airport!

Once in Omaha, the group went straight to one of Warren’s favorite restaurants, Piccolo Pete’s. Author Andrew Kilpatrick was also dining at Piccolo Pete’s. Mr. Kilpatrick actually mentioned the Delta Trust/UALR Independent Study program in his most recent book Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffet (Part III). French Hill introduced Mr. Kilpatrick and his wife to the group.

The next morning started bright and early for the students as they arrived at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center at 5 a.m. to secure seats for the group.

The moment the doors open 30,000 Buffett enthusiasts storm the center in hopes of grabbing the best seats in the house.

Can’t complain about these seats!

The meeting began at 8:30 with an entertaining movie full of new and hilarious company commercials. Warren even participated in an episode of Glee created specifically for this meeting. Morningstar has an excellent review of the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholder Meeting here. After the meeting, we made our rounds through the expo center and ran into Mr. Kilpatrick again.

We also met the famed Geico lizard!

Next, we attended the YPO/WPO reception and panel discussion with speakers: Tom Gayner, President of Markel Corporation; Vitaliy Katsenelson, CIO at Investment Management Associates; Thomas Russo, Partner at Gardner Russo & Gardner; and Timothy Vick, Senior VP and Senior Portfolio Manager at Sanibel Captiva Investment Advisors.

After a long and exciting day, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner with a great group of friends at Gorat’s, another of Warren’s favorite restaurants in Omaha.

Sunday morning, we attended Markel Corporation’s annual brunch and then visited Borsheim’s for shopping, games and a little more food.

Warren decided to join us at Borsheim’s too!

And of course no trip to Berkshire is complete without a pic in front of Warren’s home!
