Meeting The Financial Needs of Women | Carole Smith

Delta Trust & Bank was founded on the basic principle of delivering the highest level of customer service possible. To meet this goal we knew financial education would always play a dominant role in our commitment. We quickly realized there was a void in delivering sophisticated financial services and information to women. Delta Trust established a Women’s Advisory Council to fill this void.

The Council discovered women were eager to participate in financial discussions and strived to learn more about banking, investing and estate planning. We studied women’s financial needs and goals, and found staggering statistics among many studies:

• 84% of married women are either solely or jointly responsible for household financial decisions.
• 95% of all women are financial decision makers.
• Over the next 20 years, some $25 trillion in the USA will be passed to women through divorce, death of a spouse or inheritance.
• Women already make up almost ½ of the nation’s millionaires.
• Women have outnumbered men on college campuses since 1979 and in graduate schools since 1984.
• 60% of high net worth women have earned their own fortunes.
• The average woman is widowed at the age of 55. And 56% of these women do not remarry. So millions of women will live an average of 30 years on their own – making their own financial decisions.

As staggering as some of these statistics are, we felt like we were up to the task of trying to tackle the needs of this growing market. Again, we knew that education and very personal service were the keys. So in 2005, the Delta Trust & Bank Women’s Advisory Council launched the first Lifestyle Series program. This program is still growing strong in 2013 and now includes a spring and fall luncheon, monthly small group workshops and many other events that solely support the needs of women, their families, their businesses and their professions.

Because we are a full service financial institution with banking, investments, trust, insurance and mortgage services all “under one roof”, we are the perfect resource for delivering all types of real life scenarios and solutions. The case study scenarios we present at our Lifestyle Series seminars are actual situations that our customers have faced in their lives – death of a spouse, divorce, aging parents that have to be cared for, loss of a job, illness, starting a new business – that affect financial decisions.
